Lesson 3.1: Practical Barriers
We must recognise that whilst estrangement can bring some positive, empowering outcomes, for many estranged students there will be additional barriers due to their circumstances. These barriers can be both practical and emotional in their progression into higher education and employment. You may already be aware of these barriers but it is important to recap:
Estranged students may lack stable housing and may be sofa surfing, staying with friends, or at risk of homelessness. University holidays can be especially difficult as many halls close, leaving students without a place to stay.
Without contact with parents, students may struggle to provide consent forms for trips or activities. This can lead to non-participation due to fear of disclosing their situation.
Without financial support from family, estranged students often need to work to support themselves. This can impact their ability to focus on studies and may deter them from pursuing higher education.
The absence of family support and feelings of shame can affect students’ ability to form new relationships. This emotional barrier can lead to isolation and difficulty accessing available support.
For each statement below, choose the most empathetic and supportive response. After the quiz, reflect on how institutions and individuals can better support estranged students.
