Making the most of a University Open Day

PROGRESSION MENTOR BLOG | JULY 2023

By Louise Bateman, SUN Progression Mentor at St Vincent College

On Wednesday 19 April 2023, St Vincent College and Richard Taunton Sixth Form College sent a coach of Level 3 students to the University of Winchester’s UCAS Fair. In advance of the day, students researched specific courses to prepare them for the UCAS Fair, they were then able to spend more time at the UCAS Fair discussing their options and how they could progress into their chosen pathway. We worked with the students on preparing for the fair and what questions they could ask to support them with their progression.

There were 100s of universities available to speak to, as well as a vast array of subject-specific talks. Visiting the Winchester campus was a nice experience for students. This was perhaps the first time they had visited a university campus and with many universities to speak to in one place, it was an opportunity for students to really see what’s out there and how they can apply.

Students found that it allowed them to explore their options and have informal chats that led to a greater understanding of what courses and university life could be like for them, they even got an insight into current students and their experiences with university life.

The students were able to see for themselves what it’s like to be a student on campus and absorb the feel of campus living. Students had a fantastic day and many left feeling much more informed about their post college options, and with better insight into what could be next for them.
