PROGRESSION MENTOR BLOG | JUNE 2022
By Jazz Pateman, Progression Mentor @ Richard Taunton Sixth Form College
Richard Taunton Sixth Form College recently had the pleasure of welcoming Danny Ward from MADE Training into college. Jazz Pateman, the SUN Progression Mentor, organised for Danny to deliver interactive revision skills sessions for Level 2 GCSE and Functional Skills English students.
Thanks to funding from the SUN, Danny delivered ‘The Write Stuff’ workshop which is designed to support students in building and developing skills in creative thinking, planning, and executing an effective essay, argument building, paraphrasing, and project managing the essay writing process. It was a great opportunity for students to engage in an interactive session, particularly given the restrictions on in-person activities students and colleges have faced over the past two years.
It was great because it taught me how to write more effectively and to be careful about answering the question.
More than 60 students got involved throughout the day and we received great feedback from both staff and students, with the help of fun prizes for answering questions. One student described the workshop as “fun and interactive”, whilst another noted that Danny “properly explained how to format our work, which I had struggled with”. Over 90% of students involved found the content useful with the material clearly explained, and they planned to use the techniques learned in the workshop moving forward.
