Feiron Walsh

SUN Progression Mentor at The Isle of Wight College

What is your role at the college & how can you support the students?

My role is to support students who have been identified as Uni-connect, offering 1:1 interviews to explore progression, working with L3 students at Year 2 to support their journey to their next step, i.e. University, Apprenticeships or employment. Supporting L3 Y1 to prepare for their next step through research. Contacting the L2 students in the spring term to offer to meet for a 1:1 to explore next steps. Accompanying the Careers Advisor to all L2 and L3 students for progression interviews. Ensuring any opportunities, i.e. Summer School are cascaded to the students through Teams and then following up with those students who have requested more information.

What has been your career journey & what did you study?

My careers journey started as a secretary, working for Elida Gibbs part of Unilever, my role was to support the Brand Managers, this enabled me to visit PR companies and be part of the introduction of new products. I then worked for a couple of publishers in London in an administrative role before starting work in a school, working as a technician and also responsible for producing a document called Record of Achievement. I worked closely with the Careers Adviser was introduced to the Careers Library, run by a company called HINTS. Listening to the Careers Adviser enabled me to gain a great understanding of the different pathways and also the opportunity to evidence the exploration to help the students on their progression pathway. Moving to the Isle of Wight gave me an opportunity to get employment in a middle school, as I had BSL Sign Language at L2, supporting a student with a hearing impairment. After this I worked in a Careers Office as a Student Support Officer, my main role was seeking and securing work experience, health & safety visits prior to placement. An opportunity came up to work for Connexions, and I started working as a Student Advisor, and was offered a Post Grad Dip at Reading University to study as a Careers Adviser offering Guidance. Following the closure of Connexions, I worked in the Local Authority, working in different high schools, offering Careers Advice to their students.

What is a fun fact about you?
