Spotlight: TEDxYouth@bargate

After the successful TEDxYouth@Bargate 2019, the Southern Universities Network (SUN) ran a second event in January 2020, showcasing nine amazing speakers including Natasha Devon MBE, and Shwetal Shah who has featured in the Forbes list 30 Under 30.

These inspirational speakers were joined by Dakota Tollerton, a Year 10 student from the local area, and University of Southampton graduate, Shruti Turner.

The theme for the 2020 event was ‘FutureX’, a concept developed to challenge young people to consider science, resilience and mental health from different perspectives. Our speakers delivered engaging talks with topics including the future of prosthetics, saving the world with eco-friendly approaches, and running the route of Forrest Gump. The event attracted schools from across Hampshire, Dorset and the Isle of Wight, and was also live-streamed to schools and colleges across the nation.

The unsung heroes of the half-day event included the film and tech crew, event logistics supporters and social media team who all played crucial roles in helping with promotion and advertisement and ensuring everything went to plan.

Watch out for TEDxYouth@Bargate in the future! We are always looking for speakers, viewers, and volunteers to get involved. We’d love to hear from you!
