City of Portsmouth College

Sophie Telford

SUN Progression Mentor at City of Portsmouth College

What is your role at the college & how can you support the students?

My role at City of Portsmouth College is to support underrepresented students with progression options whether that be university, apprenticeships, workplace or continuing at college. I support them by offering 1:1 sessions just to discuss options, to help them with filling in application forms or look for potential jobs or courses for them. I also organise trips to local universities so students can see what is on offer for them.

What has been your career journey & what did you study?

I started off at college studying Forensic Science, I then went on to study A level Law, Psychology, Sociology and Politics. Once I finished my studies, I got a job at HSDC as a Learning Support Assistant, I did this job at a variety of schools including SEMH and mainstream. After being a LSA for a while I decided to go into teaching and completed my Certificate in Education through the University of Portsmouth. I taught food technology and PSHE at an SEMH school for a few years as well as tutoring. I decided to have a change in career and have been working as a SUN Progression Mentor for the last year.

What is a fun fact about you?

I enjoy sea swimming, dancing, live music and watching sunsets.
