Tracy Knott

SUN Progression Mentor at City of Portsmouth College (Sixth Form Campus and Highbury Campus)

What is your role at the college & how can you support the students?

I am a SUN progression mentor at City of Portsmouth College at the Sixth form and Highbury Campus. I aim to inform SUN students of their progression options. This involves supporting students with UCAS and University applications, running workshops and organising careers events.

What has been your career journey & what did you study?

At college I studied A levels in Geography, Sociology and English Literature. My UCAS application process was supported by my college tutor, and I went to Reading University to study Geography. At Uni, one of my interests was student support.  I joined the student volunteer listening service called ‘Nightline’ and became president of the society in my third year. It was a great way to help other students and make lifelong friends. After my degree, I went on to complete a PGCE and started my career as a Geography teacher. I loved being a teacher but after 25 years decided to change my focus and start a new challenge helping those students who are underrepresented in HE in the SUN progression mentor role.

What is a fun fact about you?

I love the outdoors, particularly the coast and water sports. I have won a few trophies for water-skiing in the past.

I studied Childcare and Education at COPC Highbury Campus and then went around the world, I have studied level 4 leadership and management and half of a Certificate in Education and some other random qualifications, but I have never been to university but maybe I will one day!

What is a fun fact about you?

Fun fact I didn’t have a gap year I had a gap decade and used my level childcare qualification to travel the world!
