University of Winchester

The Access and Outreach team at The University of Winchester coordinates a programme of outreach for target primary and secondary schools.

Primary School Programme: Eighteen primary and junior schools across Andover and Basingstoke are taking part in aspiration and awareness raising activities. Staff and Higher Education Ambassadors visit schools to explore what university is about with Year 5 children. Then in Year 6, children are invited to visit the university and take part in a junior graduation.

Secondary School Programme: The team work with 19 linked secondary schools and colleges in North and Mid Hampshire and the surrounding area to help targeted learners aged 11-16 to find out more about higher education. Staff and Higher Education Ambassadors give aspiration raising workshops in schools and organise visits to the university for targeted learners in years 8 and 10.

The Access and Outreach team also continues to work in partnership with a number of organisations, including special schools, local authorities and charities, to develop tailor-made activities, talks and visits for practitioners and young people from other WP target groups. This includes:

  • Black and Minority Ethnic (including Nepalese community and ESL learners)
  • Children in Care and care leavers
  • Education Centres/ Pupil Referral Units
  • LGBT youth
  • Military Service Children
  • NEET young people (or those at risk)
  • Students with disabilities
  • Young Adult Carers
  • Young Carers

The Student Recruitment team at the University of Winchester organise Open Days and Campus Tours, attend Higher Education Fairs and deliver an annual HE Advisers’ Information Day. They are always happy to hear from individual schools and colleges who would like to visit the campus, or who would like the team to visit them, so that their students can find out more about the University of Winchester and studying in higher education.

If your school or college is not already engaged in the Access and Outreach programme, but you would like to find out more about other potential links, visits, partnership or talks, please contact the team on or 01962 841 515.

NB. Local target primary and secondary schools are identified as meeting a number of widening participation indicators through school data sets, based on data compiled by the Higher Education Access Tracker service, sourced from the Department for Education and the Higher Education Statistics Agency.
