A Maintenance Loan helps with living costs, the amount students receive depends on:

  • your household income – students from lower-income households receive more.

Students from lower-income households may also be eligible for additional grants that don’t need to be repaid.

The maximum Maintenance Loan available for 2026/27 depends on where students live during their studies:

    • Living away from parents, outside London = £10,830
    • Living away from parents, in London =£14,135
    • Living with parents = £9,118

    Repayment

Students starting university would start repayments upon earning £25,000 per year. Repayments are made from earnings above this amount at 9%.

Alongside A levels (the established academic route) and T Levels (the technical and occupational route that includes an industry placement), there will soon be a third option called V levels. This new pathway will replace the wide range of qualifications that are not A or T levels and enable students to study a range of areas.

Each V Level will be equivalent in size to one A level. This means students will be able to combine V Levels with A levels, creating a programme that reflects their interests and career ambitions. The first V Levels will be available from September 2027 in Digital, Education and Early Years, and Finance and Accounting. More subjects will follow over time.
