HSDC Alton College

Joanna Hoddinott
SUN Progression Mentor at HSDC Alton College
What is your role at the college & how can you support the students?
As SUN Progression for the HSDC – Alton Campus I sit within the careers team on site. I’m here to help the young people in my college figure out what they are going to do after they have finished their courses. This might be heading to university, undertaking an apprenticeship, taking a gap year or finding a suitable job.
What has been your career journey & what did you study?
I worked within recruitment consultancies for the first part of my career before moving to work as part of the HR function of various companies in Europe. I was the first person in my family to get a degree. And then later in life I returned to university to study for a second degree as part of a career change that took me in a completely different direction. It often feels like there’s a lot of pressure to make decisions when you’re young that will impact the rest of your life. It’s ok to take things at your own pace and if it doesn’t feel right, you can always delay taking a degree until you’re ready. There’s nothing worse than being stuck paying for and studying for something that you don’t enjoy. Instead come to it when you’re ready and embrace the experience as you’ll get a lot more out of it!
What is a fun fact about you?
I love trail running with my dog.
